Auction Project: We need your help!Next week we will be working on another component to our class' auction project. We will be making the bench and stepping stones to go with our garden set. We could certainly use help! Also, please send a shirt or covering for your son or daughter to work in to avoid concrete sticking to their uniforms on Wednesday. Volunteering: Wednesday March 8 8-9:50 and possibly 10:30-11:30 (depending on how the morning goes) You would help with mixing concrete (no experience needed, I have none!), helping remind kids to push gently with their leaves in the concrete, help with clean up, and just overall business. Donating: We will need a few materials before Wednesday: - 5 throw away pie tins (made out of aluminum, large size) - 1-2 cans of vegetable oil spray - interesting leaves that would make good imprints (they can even be lettuce leaves from the store since not much is growing right now) - two large buckets for mixing concrete - big old t-shirts to protect uniforms How can we help our community thrive? This week we focused on what makes a community thrive, and how we could help our community thrive. As part of this the students brainstormed different service projects we could do for our community to help it thrive. We discussed this as a class and came up with a few ideas. We then broke into groups that leaned towards certain project ideas to expand on these original ideas. The groups then presented their plans to the class to vote on which one the class thought would be best to do together. The different group ideas were: have a school-wide trash clean up, raise money or items to donate to the poor, have a car wash to raise money for books, have a sale to raise money for books, plant more flowers for our school garden, and make stink bug traps for the campus. It was really great to see students really engaged and excited about their plans, many of them working with other kids that they don't usually select as partners, but coming together on a similar vision. Basket WeavingThis week we had the joy of learning about basket weaving! We have been talking about Native Americans in Molalla and comparing the culture and lifestyle to our current day Molalla. We talked about the materials and resources that were handy back then an now- Natives didn't have plastic, cardboard, and cloth bags to carry around goods. They may made baskets to carry goods from local plants. They also had to plan their basket making around the time of year that they could harvest materials. We learned about local plants that are used for basket weaving, as well as some basket weaving techniques. Here are some pictures: MathIn math we are continuing to practice our addition skills, and this week introduced a number line. We talked about how to decide where to place numbers on a number line, and thinking about the spacing between numbers on your line. We worked first as a class on a number line, then everyone made their own number lines. American Heritage DaysThis week was pretty eventful. On Tuesday we had our Valentine's Day Party (thank you so much to everyone who helped in class and donated supplies to make it so festive and wonderful). Wednesday we spent the better part of the day crafting pots for our auction project, and Friday the Cedars put on American Heritage Day. In our theme work we talked about the Dickey family and why the area we are in is called Dickey Prairie. We also talked about how Native Americans were here before white settlers came to Molalla. Previously we had discussed what settlers needed to think about when establishing Molalla, so this week we talked about what Natives thought about when establishing their communities. Auction ProjectTowards the end of the year we will be having our annual auction to raise money for our school. Our class will be auctioning off a garden set that includes a bench, stepping stones, and plants in pots. This week our class started working on our auction project. Wednesday we spent a large chunk of the day making coil pots. The kids worked in teams to create a pot, some even finished early enough to add designs to their pots. Despite me having almost no voice, the kids listened intently, and heeded instructions to make some wonderful creations! Thank Yous!Thank you's really deserve a whole section this week. It was an eventful week and it could have been chaos, but all the volunteers this week made everything run so smoothly! Especially since I had little to no voice for most of the week.
Everyone was so generous with Valentines for Katie and I, we both wanted to say thank you so much for thinking of us! Everyone who donated supplies, and time for our party, thank you as well. The kids (and teachers) loved it. A special shout out to John, Audire, and Katie as well: Thank you so much Audrie for staying up late working on decorations for our room for Valentines Day, buying decorations, helping with pottery, and cleaning up. Thank you also to John who was here for pottery as well and was a great teacher for the kids, as well as cleaning up throughout the day. I really appreciate you both dropping what you were planning to do with your day to stay and help. Katie, thank you for taking lead planning our party, as well as preparing and running our Bingo game. It is so great to have a full week of school back, and to be able to get back into routine. With such inconsistent school weeks between snow and time off last week, a lot of the kids had a hard time readjusting to coming back to class. We spent time this week re-establishing routines again, and by the end of the week were running smoothly. In our Local Community unit we have started looking at historical Molalla. This week we talked about how settlers came to Molalla and had to establish a community from scratch. We looked at pictures from the 1800's and 1900's to get an idea of what Molalla looked like back then. Next week we will start digging into the culture of the 1900's talking in particular about the Buckaroo. Below are some pictures of the kids taking notes of what they notice from the pictures: Valentine's PartyNext week on Tuesday we will be having a Valentine's Day Party. We will be passing out Valentines cards but please do not write names for each student on the Valentines. They an of course write who it is from, but when they write who it is for it takes them an hour to pass out Valentines. In the morning we will be making bags for the Valentines (8-8:35). At the end of the day we will be having snacks, playing a game, and passing out their Valentines (12:20-1:25). If you would like to join for either, you are welcome to. If you would like to Volunteer to help with set up and take down, please add your name to the google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1d2vMuPAQQIBMKjUEfHM4IYSTQIR2ml5PSMy32IiG_TE/edit Thank You!Thank you for those of you who donated books to our classroom from the book fair! It is greatly appreciated. Also thank you to those of you who bought books from the book fair. It helps fund-raise for our school and it is also greatly appreciated. Choice TimeEvery morning the kids have choice time. Here are a couple sweet moments from this week.
